Tuesday 19th (19th September, 1876)

At half-past eleven departure for Venice; arrival at half-past three! An immediately delightful impression. Stay at Hôtel de l’Europe; a walk in the Piazza San Marco with R. and the children. We dine at six; afterwards a serenade before the Società! Workmen from the Arsenal, who delight us, they regale us with cheerful, devout, and solemn songs. I ask for the “Canzone del Tasso”,^[1] which moves me deeply. Inexpressible joy in this music, the soul of the people!
