Cosima Wagner Diaries

To the Accademia delle Belle Arti, where R. gives me the pleasure of accompanying me there; a painful parting from those divine things, as from Venice itself, which we leave at one o’clock. Sad, sad is the city, where that which now lives within it seems like worms, wholly alien to its noble and distinctive body! Yet I do not look upon this living present and saw only the Eternal; from few human beings has parting been as difficult for me as from this city ; it has cast its spell upon me, and I know that no other city will ever do so again. — — —

Arrival in Bologna at five o’clock. A walk to the square (?) [Victor Emmanuel];[1] gloomy impression. I write down these Venetian days from here, with melancholy that they were so fleeting.
