Up early with Richard and the children; the Piazza dei Signori, the Piazza delle Erbe, the Arena, and finally a breakfast “à l’Italiana” on the banks of the Adige. Much merriment. R. returns home; I, unfortunately accompanied by a hired servant, wander about and see everything imaginable. San Zeno makes the greatest impression upon me, followed by San Fermo. The theatre interests me also; above all, however, the general physiognomy of the city and its people., Giardino Giusti, ravishing fragrance. In the evening, at the Teatro Ristori, “Otello”, very bad.
