A bad night and a most miserable day with the extraction of the tooth; leeches applied, some relief. R. had to receive Fräulein Scheffsky, who has been especially recommended to him by Hofrat Düfflipp as a modest and diligent girl. Her voice and person are pleasing; he engages her for Sieglinde; she complains of her position in Munich—only the King, she says, is favourably disposed toward her; he has even sent her the testimonial of the Kapellmeister and the Intendant, which declared “that nothing would come of her,” that she might learn to know her friends.
