I drove up there with R. one of these days; the scaffolding has been removed—an exalted impression from the auditorium as from the stage, almost dreamlike; it moves one with a wistful exaltation. How little true participation has accompanied the spirit which here reveals itself; how detached it stands! This edifice shines before me like a sunset—no dawn! Much, very much have I thought of Hans. Today, Monday, R. had pleasure in Herr Unger, who rehearsed once more, after having long been indisposed. Herr Schlosser also present, making high demands. I address the envelopes of the honorary patrons. In the evening Herr Brassin,[1] the violinist from Breslau—already many are here, and one might rejoice in the work that lies before us, were it not that care weighs upon us, and an experience of which we deem it our duty to remain silent.
