R. had a tolerable night; yet the rehearsals, and all that is connected therewith, take a heavy toll on him. Today I also attend the rehearsal: astonishing things are being accomplished, particularly on the part of Brandt.

Returned home, I find a sentimental letter from Kapellmeister Wüllner in Munich, explaining to me why he was no Wagnerian formerly! He would very much like to retain the direction of Rheingold and Walküre, and Kapellmeister Levi has made it a condition of his remaining in Munich that he conduct the four works.
