R. suffering ever more! Again there is no possibility of his leading the rehearsal. Today the second act! Yet when he is absent, nothing can truly be accomplished; good will, diligence, &c., do not help. As I was driving up, Herr Feustel called me into his office to ask whether I were still resolved to devote my expected fortune to the cause, matters indeed in a bad state. I answered: Yes and immediately write to Claire, asking when I might come into possession of my forty thousand francs, in order first to surrender these; thereafter I shall appeal to my father for my dowry — in God’s name! Feustel does not appear to believe that all the patrons certificates will be sold.
