Dictation, my eyes trouble me sorely; a fine Indian saying: he who brings forth beautiful works throughout his life, has overcome sensuality. A letter from Hofmann,[1] editor of the Weser Newspaper; he says that were one to attack the press openly with regard to R., one would have the whole pack upon oneself. Herr Bauernfeld [2] is said to have published a play in which R. is made ridiculous, and the editor of a major Leipzig newspaper recommends the book as useful, welcome, and so on.

[2] Eduard von Bauernfeld (1802 – 1890), Austrian comedy writer of the Biedermeier period, also a lyric poet, storyteller, and critic, wrote the drawing-room comedy “The Rich Heiress” in 1876.
