Dictation; great, great melancholy; the sole cheer comes from Siegfried. R. walks out to the theatre; everything up there is a wasteland! The preparations for quartering must be carried on very casually, since it cannot be determined in the remotest degree who will come! — — My pessimism goes so far that I can hardly believe in paying curiosity anymore at all! — — R. wishes to explain the situation to a patron.

A fine book by an English lady, Helen Zimmern,[1] a biography of Schopenhauer, written with great understanding. — In the evening, “Don Quixote”.
