R. receives a letter from Lilli Lehmann; they all once more protest against Fräulein Brandt. Otherwise she still seems to assume that she will receive no leave. First rehearsal with Herr Unger: R. appears not dissatisfied, though neither entirely satisfied.
Lessons with the children. In the morning Herr Groß visited me, reporting that R. had lately been mistaken; they have now reached only halfway with the subscription certificates. An ever more depressing impression. I walk with R. in the Hofgarten; the hawthorn is in blossom, a lovely fragrance. In the evening a man from Markneukirchen arrives with an instrument which is to replace the orchestra! … It proves to be a concertina! Yet he has also made a violin which possesses a fine tone; the man himself is serious.
