About midday, as we have our musicians at lunch with us, several telegrams arrive; first, from Herr Niemann, recommending a Fräulein von Pretfeld for Sieglinde, of whom all present declare that she is—even in figure alone—impossible! Then from Herr Jauner, who expects the answer to his letter in order to conclude matters with Frau Materna! Thus all the ostentatious arrogance of vulgarity! R. points to his letter to Dr Standhartner and concludes with the sentence that he hopes not to have to expect any hostile disposition on the part of the Direction. —
At the same time a telegram is sent to Fräulein Scheffsky (again concerning Sieglinde)! The King telegraphs very briefly that he renounces the audition! Herr Feustel reports – at last – that an innkeeper has been engaged for the refreshments.
